RainMan - 27 Jan 2005 16:29 GMT VS 6 integrated help. Once help is invoked from IDE it jumps into windows CE topics. It is driving me crazy. Is there any way to set up help to present a box with choices without “intelligent” jumping?

Gary Chang[MSFT] - 28 Jan 2005 05:56 GMT Hi RainMan,
Do you mean when you click the Help\Content in the VC6 or VB6 IDE to invoke the MSDN(2001 Oct version?), it will automatically open the Windows CE topics?
If so, when you open the MSDN outside the VS6 IDE, does the same problem happen?
Thanks!

RainMan - 28 Jan 2005 12:51 GMT Yes, for common topics it briefly displays dialog with choices of a platforms (in both cases) and without any interaction it jumps to CE related topic.

Which version of the MSDN you troubled?
Is it the MSDN Oct 2001? If so, please check its shortcut's target property, does it point to the "... ...\Microsoft Visual Studio\MSDN\2001OCT\1033\MSDN130.COL"?
Thanks!

RainMan - 29 Jan 2005 12:19 GMT Hi Garry, Yes it does. But I am not sure I follow, since this behavior is common: for MSDN library invoked from a shortcut and from within VS 6. if I remember correctly, that was also a case for pre-Oct version of MSDN.

> if I remember correctly, > that was also a case for pre-Oct version of MSDN. Do you mean your early version MSDN also has such problem?
By the way, does this problem occur from the beginning-- when you installed the VS6 and its corresponding MSDN?
Thanks!

RainMan - 01 Feb 2005 13:01 GMT Garry, it has been this way since MSDN release that integrated with both: VS 6 and .NET 2000.
Currently I am using last version of MSDN that integrates with VS 6 – October 2001, and the latest that integrates with .NET only.
I do not recall this happening after later MSDN versions that are integrated only with .NET 2000 and 2003.

>I do not recall this happening after later MSDN versions that are >integrated only with .NET 2000 and 2003. OK, that's alright. For I could not repro this problem on my side, it is tough to find out what's wrong with your early MSDN settings:(
Thanks for your understanding!

RainMan - 02 Feb 2005 12:25 GMT As I have mentioned: "It has been this way since MSDN release that integrated with both: VS 6 and .NET 2000."
I have never changed any settings for MSDN. All versions that came after release of .NET for integration with VS 6 (up to October release) were installed without my intervention.
Do you know where exactly all the settings for MSDN help are?

Maybe some applications in your system changed thesettings for MSDN, do you have tried to reinstall the MSDN Oct 2001?
I think it would fix this problem...
Thanks for your understanding!

RainMan - 03 Feb 2005 21:33 GMT Hi Garry,
I cannot think about any application changing settings but VS. if there is any setting or set of settings controlling MSDN behavior where can I find it?
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled MSDN library before posting and it still behave this way. I had to create new subset in order to stop that behavior; I thought that there is another way of preventing automatic jumps.

>I cannot think about any application changing settings but VS. if there is >any setting or set of settings controlling MSDN behavior where can I find it? AFAIK, the setting that will change the MSDN startup's URL would be your MSDN's shortcut's target string.
However, you mentioned it remains unchanged, so in this scenario we couldn't privide more suggestions for we are unable to repro that behavior on our machines for further investigation:(
Thanks for your understanding!

Gary Chang[MSFT] - 08 Feb 2005 04:20 GMT Hi RainMan,
Meantime, I have already consulted your problem with our internal setup specialists, it also appear a rare case to them and without the repro scenario they don't have any more ideas on this issue.
Considered that I think this problem may not be suitable to handle by newsgroup support further, if you have critical concern on this problem and need to fix it, I suggest you can contact our Product Support Services to get help on this issue, for a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS
In addition, if this problem is an product issue, PSS won't charge money. Every MSDN subscriber has two free support incidents. You could use one of them to contact Microsoft PSS. So you don't need to pay money yet. Surely if the issue is a product issue, you still have two free support incidents. :)
If there is anything unclear, please feel free to post here. We are glad to be of assistance.
Thanks for your understanding!
