Custom Project Type

Hi,

I have been trying to create a new project type in VS2005 Beta1.  I am
looking at the C++ sample BscPrj and the C# sample MyProject.  My
understanding is that I could create a new project type in C# using the VS
interop assembly and the helper classes, i.e. similar to the MyProject
sample, rather than implement it in C++ like BscPrj.  Unfortunately, the
MyProject sample does so little and I could not find more information on how
to create a new project type.  Is it possible for me to extend MyProject to
include all the functionality in BscPrj?  Is there more samples and
documentation regarding this?

Thanks,

Not yet, but there will be.

Implementing a custom project system with C# and the Managed Package
Framework will get a lot easier come Beta2. I'm sure its probably possible
to expand on the MyProject sample that shipped with Beta1, but if you're
not in a rush, I'd almost recommend waiting for Beta2 where the Managed
Package Framework will have a more robust and fully featured set of classes
and enhanced documentation to help you out.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard a solid drop date for Beta2 yet, so if you
are in rush to get started, I'd recommend trying to port over the missing
features based on the BscProj implementation. Though this might mean having
to change your implementation a bit to accomodate the changes that'll come
in Beta2.

Sincerely,

Thanks Ed!

Do you have a rough time frame when Beta2 will get dropped?  How much
improvement will we get from Beta2?  Will there be a sample of a fully
functional project system?  Because the last what I heard is that there is no
definite plan from Microsoft to provide more classes and samples.  I know you
might not be able to answer all these questions.  We are currently in the
project planning phase, so it will help us a lot if we can get a bit more
information.

Thanks,

Unfortunately, I don't. First part of next year would be my best guess.
There hasn't been an official announcement. At least not one I could locate.
And I'm a bit off the rumor mill's beaten path.

I would be relatively surprised if we didn't ship a new project sample using
the new MPF. If that does happen, I'm pretty confident the problem will be
rectified with either a KB article or a Dr. eX post.

I don't know if we'll see "more" classes. But I know Allen and his team have
been working pretty hard to build a robust framework for projects. I'm
still playing with Beta1 myself (mostly editor stuff), so I'm not horribly
familiar with the new classes yet. But there's been a lot of post beta1
work, and I'm pretty sure we'll find quite a few changes between Beta1 and
Beta2.

Sorry to be so vague.

Sincerely,
Ed Dore [MSFT]

Hi, What exactly do you want to do?, maybe I can help you. I had implemented
a full project system with beta 1, I found some problems but in general there
is a workaround . In beta 2 there is a good refactoring and redesign of some
things but in general you can do a lot of stuff with beta 1.

Regards,
Gaston
