Creating a custom Output file macro

I would like to be able to create a macro such as $(OutDir) with my own
value, lets say $(MyOutDir).

How would I get started on this? There is tons of information on extending
the vs2008 environment, but I hope I don't need to get that deep right now. I
need the 10 minute version on how to do this, if that is possible.

Hello Scott,

I'm not sure I have understood your issue completely. It seems you want to
add a System Environment Variable, correct? I'm sorry, but I don't' think
it is Macro related. Am I missing anything here? If I misunderstand anthing
here, please don't hesitate to correct me.
Moreover, could you please also let us know the reason why do you want to
add such Environment Variable? Do you have any business requirement?
The more details you provide, the more helpful answer we can provide.

Please also feel free to let me if I have any more concern. We are glad to
assist you.
Have a great day,
Best regards,
Wen Yuan

Pick a cpp project from the solution view in VS2008, Click properties, Build
Events, post-Build events. Then click the ... at the end of the Command line
text box. Now click on Macros>>

Now you can see a name with its corresponding value, I assumed these were
macros since they were displayed when I clicked the "Macros" button.

What ever they are called I would like to "simply" create one for all
projects in my solution or better yet, global to all my solutions.

All projects that I deal with seem to have the same capability in the post
build event dialog, and I would like to create a common "macro" for a output
directory. Yes I can create a path with a combination of these macros, but a
single macro for all projects would make these commands easier to read and
less error prone.

(This is how you could do this in VS2005.)

You can create a property sheet, inherit your project settings from it,
and create that makro in the property sheet. (See also the Property
Manager view.)

Gerhard,

Thanks for the reply.

I tried this in VS2008 and it seems to work just fine.

Thanks again.
