Hi all,

I have a very simple test WSE 3.0 enabled web service.  The Web Service is
the default "Hello World" file based web service in VS 2005.
I used the wizard to secure this service using the "Username" authentication
and chose to authorize that the user is "testuser".

When I invoke the simple "helloworld" web method from a test client using
WSE 3.0, I can get the expected authentication error.  If I simply invoke the
"helloworld" method from internet explorer, no authentication error is thrown
and the web method is invoked and returns a result (even though no
credentials were passed).

Why is WSE only authenticating / authorizing requests that come from a WSE
test client, and not Internet Explorer?  Seems like I am missing something
very important here.

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon,

Yes, you are missing something import ;-).

<system.web>
 <webServices>
  <!-- uncomment for production use -->
  <protocols>
   <remove name="HttpGet"/>
   <remove name="HttpPost"/>
   <remove name="Documentation"/>
  </protocols>
 </webServices>
</system.web>

You have to remove those protocols from your ws virtual directory.

just to add an extra penny onto Pablo's great advice, I wrote a post about
this that also has a pointer to more tips about configuring web services for
deployment:

Thanks for the responses.  However this solution did not work.  I never had
this problem with WSE 2.0 (I had the settings you posted in WSE 2.0).

Could this be a WSE 3.0 issue?  I also have an issue with WSE 3.0 not
generating WSE client proxies at all.  Maybe this is some kind of related
install issue.

Any ideas?  Any other info I can provide to make it easier to help?
Thanks,
Jon
