Hello, I'm running windowsXP service pack 2 on a  Intel PIII at 500mhz eith
256 mb RAM:

I am trying to convert a FAT filesystem on my floppy disk in my drive a:\ to
a NTFS filesystem using convert.exe. in verbose mode, it sees every file and
such, but it returns with errors. Following is the output I get when running
convert without the /v option:

C:\Documents and Settings\matt>convert a: /fs:ntfs
The type of the file system is FAT.
An error occurred while reading the file allocation table (FAT 1).
Volume Serial Number is F4D4-0F32
Windows is verifying files and folders...
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

   1,457,664 bytes total disk space.
       9,216 bytes in 12 folders.
   1,188,352 bytes in 53 files.
     260,096 bytes available on disk.

512 bytes in each allocation unit.
2,847 total allocation units on disk.
508 allocation units available on disk.

A: cannot be converted because it contains files or directories
with reserved NTFS names in the root directory. There can be no
files or directories named $Mft, $MftMirr, $LogFile, $Volume,
$AttrDef, $BitMap, $Boot, $BadClus, $Secure, $UpCase, $Extend
or $Quota in the root directory.

C:\Documents and Settings\matt>

It seems that the $Mft, $Mftr etc. is header information that would be
included in ANY FAT filesystem. If that is the case, then convert would fail
for any FAT/NTFS conversion. What is this error and how can I work around it
to get these files.

Are you asking in the right group?
eggmatters - 18 Jul 2006 23:43 GMT
Well, being that I was directed here by the website, and I posted next to a
bunch of other postings with the same issue, I felt that yes, this was an
apropriate group. But, I haven't received a reply in over a week with this
problem so, I wiped windowsXP from my desktop, installed a Linux Debian
kernel, which recognizes not only FAT, but NTFS as well. Oh yeah, and it
doesn't crash on a daily basis like XP did. Go figure. Thanks for the help
though. If after a week, I don't think it's necessary to reply to somebody's
post. Obviously, nobody knows how to fix what is a seemingly simple problem.
GO MICROSOFT!!!!!

Hi Matt,

Where did you find the link that directed you to here?

> I haven't received a reply in over a week

Web forums have replaced thise newsgroups.
http://forums.microsoft.com

This is newsgroup is called "Microsoft.public.dotnet.vjsharp".
dotnet is the .NET framework
vjsharp is a "Java" language for the .NET framework. This newsgroup is for
development.

I'm not sure NTFS is the right file system for a small device like a floppy.
Why would you use NTFS on a floppy?

(Sorry I have not used a floppy for 10 years, so I can't test this for you.
I don't have a floppy in any of my computers)

This is most likely a bad driver on your XP system.

If you have any programming questions I will be more than happy to take a
look at them.
