hi,
i recently bought a new laptop with vista home premium and downloaded
windows live messenger but about 3 seconds after login, the program stops
responding and needs to close down. I see a little java icon next to the msn
icon appear on the bottom right corner but disappears with the msn icon after
i close the program. It is when that java icon pops up that the program
freezes/stops responding. I've tried everything from reinstalling to doing
stuff others suggested on different forums.

Okay, there seems to be some kind of issue with Vista and the latest
version of the Java Runtime Environment.  I dont know if it has been
raised as an issue yet.  Basically, java is used in the Microsoft "Live
Today" news window thing that pops up - funnily enough about 3 seconds
after messenger starts.  There is a way to disable the "Live Today"
window.  You can do it without logging in, but - funnily - it doesnt
work.  So you have to log in first to disable it.  But we cant log in,
cuz MSN crashes.  The work around:

1. Uninstall the Java Runtime Environment.
2. Log into MSN (It works! Yay! - Although you will get a message
saying that the Java Runtime is missing and recommended - Ignore this
for now)
3. Maximise the MSN contact list.
4. "Tools" menu -> Options
5. Under the "General" Area, uncheck "Show Windows Live Today after I
sign in to Messenger"
6. Click OK
7. Reinstall the Java Runtime Environment, and you should be okay from
now on because MSN will save the options above, and not pop up the "Live
Today" when you log in next, averting the issue.

Hope this helps someone, frustrated me for a good half an hour.
