Every now and then when I go on my form in the IDE the form goes blank
and the computer grinds away for 10 or 20 seconds and then everything
reaapears.  What exactly is the computer doing and is there a way to
prevent this from happening
dbahooker@hotmail.com - 14 Feb 2007 02:32 GMT
yeah go back to Vb6

sorry this dotnet crap is half-baked still

and yet; they sit there and work on selling us the next greatest

VS.NET 2005? Do you have SP1 installed?

The lockup could be due to a lack of memory as well ... the PC maybe
swapping data in or out of the swap file.

I have this problem as well, and I have 2GB of memory. It pretty much
happens whenever I bring up a form in design mode. I just figured it was an
opportunity for me to learn patience?

No, I think what I said what my IDE hangs for a few seconds when I try to
open a form in design mode. I don't think it's ever crashed on me, and I'd
hardly throw the whole thing out just because it hangs every now and then.

WHY DO YOU SUPPORT A COMPANY THAT IS TOO BUSY MAKING XBOXES IN ORDER
TO TAKE VB SERIOUSLY?

AN IDE THAT HANGS AND CRASHES IS NOT -- I REPEAT-- _NOT_ ACCEPTABLE

a language that is TWICE AS VERBOSE, ONE QUARTER THE FUNCTIONALITY AND
PRONE TO FURTHER 'VISUAL FRED ACTIONS' is _NOT_ acceptable

Although this guy is a little bit harsh, he speaks the truth - MS VS
2005 truly is a mediocre
piece of software. Sure, it's a fully integrated environment, having
intellisense for multiple
languages, database support, version control, web development tools,
and much more. But
this does deny the fact that it also comes WITH RESOURCE LEAKS!!
And plenty of them.
I don't about you, but I don't think that 4 GB of RAM should be
considered a minimum
for a program that is basically a text editor with a compiler.
dbahooker@hotmail.com - 22 Feb 2007 15:06 GMT
thanks man

everyone calls me a flamer; but at least i don't sell products that
crash every single day and run like crap with even 2gb ram

thanks a ton man

Did you load service pack 1?

I have not had a crash since installing SP 1 :-)
dbahooker@hotmail.com - 22 Feb 2007 16:17 GMT
oh come on dude.

it has to do with find and replace and focus.

SP1 did NOT fix the issue; nor did Sp1 fix 'vista compatability'

Wow bad luck :-( VS.NET 2005 w/ SP1 is EXTREMELY solid for me. I'm actually
quite impressed.

I have not had these problems.

The only similar problems I had is it would take ages to complile a very
simple project sometimes, but deleting the \OBJ\ directory of a project
always fixes the strange problems (it will be recreated anyway)

I don't think the problem lies with physical memory, but with virtual
memory. It seems that if you use a page file performance plummets, it
seems that the ide tries to use a page file over any extra ram. My dev
machine at work is almost top of the line (or it was when I got
it :-) ) and as soon as I turned off my page file it seems my IDE
refreshes much faster. I still have some stuttering with inherited
forms/user controls but not to much. Let me know if disabling your
page file makes any difference - I'm curious.

Also, I believe the lag time caused by loading a form in the designer
is caused by Visual Studio parsing the MyForm.designer.vb file and
laying out all the form's components. If thats true I'm not surprised
it takes a bit to load - just imagine what your user's would say if
one of your programs created and positioned that many controls at
runtime!

Thanks,

Seth Rowe

disabling my page file?

are you KIDDING ME?

I just can't wait until gigabyte comes out with the new Iram cards
like seriously--- if WIndows can't friggin figure out how to use
memory then I'll give it a solid state hard drive for my damn page
file ROFL

I just swear that MS is on crack; they never should have cut Windows
NT down to a single architecture.
I mean, if NT still ran MIPS and PPC and Alpha; maybe we wouldn't be
stuck with such a crappy a.s solution.

Maybe if MS didn't kill off the Alpha; then maybe we could have had a
real 64bit and 10gb ram solution 5 years ago and then we could all
permanently lived without a page file.

but I mean seriously.
If Windows has 2gb ram; and Visual Studio 'pages too much' is this
_MY_ configuration problem?
If Windows has 2gb ram; and Visual Studio 'pages too much' is this
_MY_ configuration problem?
If Windows has 2gb ram; and Visual Studio 'pages too much' is this
_MY_ configuration problem?

I'm tired of all the security headaches; and I really really hope that
Adobe makes a Linux native version of Dreamweaver for this next
release

I'm just sick and tired of all the bull crap.  I just wish that some
computer science prof in the 90s clued me in to how headless and
mindless M$ runs their operations.

I mean; if Mono can now run VB better than M$; am I really going to
stick around long?
VB was the only reason for me to stick around with WIndows.. like
literally the ONLY reason for me to stick with Windows.

and now that MS slaughtered VB as if it were butchering an unarmed
child-- I just don't see MS being important 5 years from now.
I mean; they killed the Xbox 1 without warning.
they're working furiously on YET ANOTHER VISUAL FRED.

Maybe they should have forced VISUAL FRED 3.0 down our throats back in
2002.  Maybe they should stop selling us crappy a.s software.
But the bottom line is that they don't respect the VB market; MS is
run by a bunch of C++ and Excel fags-- they don't understand that
2/3rds of the world runs on VB and DATABASES.

We don't need OOP.
We don't need XML.

We don't need to be 'educated'

80% of the vb6 developers 'never wrote a class'
Why does MS feel the need to FORCE FEED US ON OOP?

they killed VB6 for no reason; and 3/4 of the places I used VB6
_STILL_ can't use VB.net
but it's not like I can import VBS or VBA into VB 2005.

they shoved VB 2005 down our throats and they won't support 2002 and
2003 on Vista...

they just don't get that 'we used to have one language for everything'
and now we need to use 4.
and when I'm busy with SQL Server and a bunch of other crap; I don't
need to be subjected to CONSTANT UNNECESSARY CHANGE.

I mean seriously here.  WTF IS UP WITH THIS COMPANY?

STOP MANDATING CRYSTAL METH USAGE, MICROSOFT

Visual Basic is one of the World's - and certainly one of Microsoft's
-
most widely used programming languages. Sixty two per cent of
developers
use Visual Basic, while 37 per cent of big businesses specifically use
Visual Basic.NET - launched for Microsoft's .NET architecture. Visual
Basic has a solid following that, over the years, has forced Microsoft
to re-think aspects of the .NET roadmap

I just think that the IDE runs like crap is because the language is
twice as verbose.

twice as much VB code = 4 times as slow during development; even if
the IDE was lightning fast; it would still be too slow because your
code is 4 times more complex.

sorry kid; maybe if you stayed ON TOPIC we could get something done.

I never experienced this kinda _CRAP_ in vb6.

You might be taken seriously if you didn't continually beclown
yourself.

Your posts need more cowbell.  No, really.  More cowbell would help.
susiedba@hotmail.com - 23 Feb 2007 19:25 GMT
for starters; I am not, nor have I ever posted as 'master programmer'
I perhaps sign on as some of those other people.. am I trying to being
DECIETFUL?

No.  Google groups blocks my posts after about a dozen so of course I
need different user names.

Master Programmer is a god and he should be Sr Management at MSFT.

I've got too much backbone to ever go back to Microsoft.
