Hi Dave,
You can get CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name and check the domain name, if
it's equal to current computer name, it's a local user; otherwise it's a
domain user:
static bool IsDomainUser()
{
AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetPrincipalPolicy(PrincipalPolicy.WindowsPrincipal)
;
string fullname = Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name;
int i = fullname.LastIndexOf('\\');
if (i > 0)
{
string domain = fullname.Substring(0, i);
return string.Compare(domain, Environment.MachineName,
true) != 0;
}
return false;
}
Sincerely,
Walter Wang (wawang@online.microsoft.com, remove 'online.')

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting

That's what I'm presently doing. I was hoping there was a cleaner way.

Alternatively, you can also compare the Environment.MachineName to Environment.DomainName,
when they are equal, the logon session is local, else Environment.DomainName holds the
current logon domain.
