I am a beginner and I am acquiring a new PC with XP Professional,  I
am currently using notepad to write ASP.Net pages.  Is there any
software that would help me or make it easier to learn?

thanks,

MSFT offer you an IDE free:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/express/aa700797.aspx

There are also beta editions of the 2008 versions:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/express/default.aspx

You will have to decide if you want to be a beta tester :-)

Assuming you already know HTML and CSS beginners starting to learn to
develop .NET applications from square one should start by learning the C#
programming language using a real textbook like those from Deitel and Deitel
[1] and by usng free software such as Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express
and SQL Server Express. Expect at least a year and probably up to two years
to get basic to intermediate competency noting I say that realistically so
you don't think you're a dummy and quit because it is not a piece of cake
and takes time and lots of work okay?
