Better name than dot net

As a coding environment and set of base classes, vs.net is the best thing
since sliced bread. But the name: ".net"... it really doesn't work.
People who are unfamiliar with it look at you funny when you say it. It
sounds dumb like the now failed market hype: "dot com." And try to do a
web search on .net.

How about dumping it for something more sensible. Any ideas?

Microsoft will be dropping the ".NET" name in new versions. The original
name for Windows Server 2003 was Windows 2003 .NET Server.

Yes, but that was just a case of them narrowing the focus. For a while,
MS went .NET-crazy, calling just about everything .NET to the extent
that no-one knew what they were talking about. These days, developers
*do* know what it means for something to be "written in .NET" or
similar.

Now that MS has redressed the focus issue, I don't think it would make
sense for them to drop the name. I think it was a bad idea in the first
place as names go - it's a pain to search for, and it looks silly at
the start of a sentence - but now it's been established, changing it
entirely would be a mistake.

(I know about the "WinFX" name for the API for Longhorn - I doubt that
that means that the name .NET is disappearing though.)

I have read (more than once) that the ".NET" portion will be dropped in the
Visual Studio brand name, as .NET has indeed, established itself now.

It may well be removed from the Visual Studio brand name, but that
doesn't mean that it's being dropped completely. As part of the Visual
Studio name, it's somewhat clumsy - but you need a name for the
framework itself, and I think it would be silly to change the name from
.NET to something completely new.

Ah. I took that to be entirely incidental to his question, which was
about the name .NET in general.
