Associate URI to a program

I'm looking for a way to link an URI with my program.
Just as iTunes or MPlayer do with mms://.. or irc://
Any help?

I went looking how to do this since I've thought about it before and was
curious. It is done with a few registry changes. I found this page on
msdn that gives some details:
