Problems Before/After Uninstalling .Net Framework 1.1 - Please Hel

seatroy - 09 Feb 2005 09:59 GMT OK, my problems all started when I was unable to install the Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903). When I tried to install it from Windows Update, it kept failing (note there were other security updates that were installed without any problems). I searching the web and reading about others that have had similar problems. One suggestion was to uninstall the .Net Framework 1.1 and re-install it. So, like an idiot, I uninstalled .Net Framework 1.1.
Now my one little problem has expanded to many worse problems. For one, I can't install .Net Framework 1.1. I have tried all of the "tricks" and nothing seems to work. Worse yet, it seems that no installations that use msi scripts are working. I have tried several installations (just stuff that I don't really need, just for testing) and nothing will install now (and yes, I have rebooted). I am worried that the Windows Installer is now corrupted. ALL THIS FROM UNINSTALLING .NET FRAMEWORK!!! Good grief. The more I work with computers the more I wish I had chosen a different line of work.
Here is the log file from the failed .Net Framework install: [02/09/05,02:42:15] Starting Install.exe [02/09/05,02:42:15] Parsing switches from commandline: "H:\Temp\System Temp\IXP000.TMP\Install.exe" [02/09/05,02:42:15] SourceDir: H:\Temp\System Temp\IXP000.TMP\ [02/09/05,02:42:15] Install started [02/09/05,02:42:15] Checking system requirements [02/09/05,02:42:15] OS: Win 2k [02/09/05,02:42:15] Ver: [02/09/05,02:42:15] SP: Service Pack 4 [02/09/05,02:42:15] Checking Internet Explorer Version [02/09/05,02:42:15] Looking for 5.0.2919.6307 [02/09/05,02:42:15] Found Internet Explorer Version: 6.0.2800.1106 [02/09/05,02:42:15] Internet Explorer Version is OK... This is my everyday work machine so reinstalling Windows is almost out of the question. I simply don't have the time for this right now. Any help would be most appreciated.

Kenny - 09 Feb 2005 12:57 GMT Troy, sorry to hear you are having issues with this because I just went through .net hell myself in trying to get web matrix going at the same time as visual studio. I had my installation so screwed up at one point that I considered reformating the drive and starting over. Somehow I managed to get everything working by reinstalling .net and webmatrix config files etc. etc. I still really am unsure what I did to get it all working, but it does work now, with the exception that the security patch you are trying to install will not install on my instance, and I'm not going to completely format and reinstall everything just to get that to install. I don't pretend to be a windows guru, but I'd say uninstall your .net instace and things that make use of it and clear the references out of the registry and then try reinstalling. Apparently the .net versions and products (webmatrix, visual studio etc.) don't seem to want to play well together when you start mixing versions....
Not sure it that helps or is just commissuration, KAC

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad you have (most) of your problems figured out. I am not going to mess with anything until I get specific information on what I need to do. I can't afford to mess this machine up any worse than it already is. I am hoping to hear from a Microsoft representetave and let them explain what steps I need to take. I am an MSDN Enterprise subscriber and am trying out the discussion group first before calling and using one of my support calls.
Thanks, Troy

All the updates installed just fine except that one. I did uninstall .net and reinstalled it with no problems but the update still will not work. Have you been able to find a way to fix this yet?
Thanks, Jeremy
Jeremy Couch - 10 Feb 2005 05:24 GMT OK quick update. I went to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx? FamilyID=9BBD5617-49AE-40BF-B0FA-F9049349C6F5&displaylang=en and manually downloaded and tried to install the update. I got the error message "Setup cannot continue because one or more pre-requisites required to install KB886903 failed."
Here's the log.

Steven Cheng[MSFT] - 10 Feb 2005 06:38 GMT Hi Troy and Jeremy,
Are you installing the recommeded updates by the order list in the windows update site? Also, have close other running programs when installing that update? When the first time I try intalling the update on my local side (winxp pro sp2), I also receive error which prevent me from installing the new updates. Then, I restart my box and successfully install the updates before running any other programs.
Also, if this is an urgent issue which break your daily work , I suggest you contact the PSS about this update.
Thanks & Regards,

seatroy - 15 Feb 2005 23:03 GMT Hi Steven,
Thanks for replying to my post. Yes, I updated (originally) directly from the windows update site. That is when I had trouble with the .Net Framework 1.1 security update. I rebooted my machine and made sure that nothing was running before trying again. It simply would not work. That is when I started trying to see if other people were having similar problems by reading the message boards. I found that there were others having trouble and one suggestion was to uninstall and re-install the .Net Framework 1.1. So, that is what I attempted to do. However, after uninstalling the .Net Framework 1.1, I found that I could not re-install it. I tried reading the log files to figure out what was going on and decided that the problem might be with the windows installer. So, I tried to install a different windows update (it wasn't a critical update and I was just updating to see if it would successfully install). I couldn't get it to update either. That is when I decided that my problems have expanded to include the windows installer. Since then I have found that I cannot install the new security update for MSN Messenger. Like I said, I believe my biggest problem now is a broker Windows Installer. I believe that uninstalling the .Net Framework 1.1 somehow broke my Windows Installer and it will no longer work with any MSI files. I need to know how to figure out what is missing or broken and how to fix it. If I can get my Windows Installer working again, then I will work on getting the .Net Framework going. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Troy
> Hi Troy and Jeremy, > [quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > (This posting is provided "AS IS", with no warranties, and confers no > rights.) Steven Cheng[MSFT] - 17 Feb 2005 02:47 GMT Hi Troy,
Thanks for your followup. I'm sorry to hear that the problem became rather worse. Then, have you installed some of the updates on windowsupdate before your installer engine broken down?
Since you're not able to intall any programs now, there must be some underlying settings got currupted , you can have a look at the following info I've found in some kb and threads:
If still no one helps, I'm afraid the your sys enviorment may encounter some serious damage. Would you consider reinstalling the system?
==================================== If the Windows Installer does not install successfully, one of the following may be the cause:
- If an environment variable is empty, you receive the following error message:
Error 1631: Windows Installer Service failed to start. Contact your support personnel. After you add a value or you remove the empty environment variable, the engine installs successfully.
For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
KBLink:251274.KB.EN-US: Error Message When You Attempt to Install Program Using Windows Installer
- On Windows NT 4.0, if the Sfc.dll file exists in the system folder, the engine may not install successfully. For additional information about a cause and workaround for this problem, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
KBLink:264652.KB.EN-US: BUG: Unable to Install or Upgrade Windows Installer Service
- On Windows 2000, version 1.2 of the Windows Installer does not install. The Windows Installer files are protected files under System File Protection (SFP) and cannot be replaced. Running version 1.2 of Instmsi.exe has no effect on the computer, and version 1.1 remains on the system. ==============================
=================================== Installer Succeeded, But You Cannot Run an .msi File ----------------------------------------------------
If the Windows Installer does install successfully, but you cannot run an .msi file, one of the following may be the cause:
NOTE: If the engine does not install correctly, you cannot run any .msi files.
- The registration of the engine may be corrupted, so that an attempt to run an .msi package fails. If this is the case, all attempts to run an .msi package fail. If only a single .msi package does not complete successfully, contact the vendor of that package for support on that particular product's installation.
To correct the registration of the Windows Installer, unregister and reregister the Installer service. This shuts down and reregisters the service, which assures that the Windows Installer engine will function properly. To do this, run the following commands from a command prompt:
"msiexec /unregister" (without the quotation marks) "msiexec /regserver" (without the quotation marks) This corrects most situations in which the Windows Installer is not responding or in which you suspect corruption. This does not affect any application that is currently installed on the computer that is using the Windows Installer.
- If correctly registering the engine does not resolve the problem and you want to remove the engine files and reinstall clean, follow these steps.
NOTE: On Windows 2000 and on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, you cannot remove the Windows Installer engine because the files are protected.
1. Run the following command from a command prompt: "msiexec /unregister" (without the quotation marks)
2. Delete the Msi.dll, Msiexec.exe, and Msihnd.dll files from the system folder. You must rename these files from the command prompt.
3. Restart Windows.
4. Run the Instmsi.exe program to install and register the engine files again.

seatroy - 17 Feb 2005 05:07 GMT Hi Steven,
Thanks so much for your help. You were right on target. My problem was with the TEMP environment variable. I don't know why it was empty but it was. After I corrected it everything worked correctly. My Windows Installer is now working, I have re-installed the .Net Framework 1.1, and have installed the .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1. I can't thank you enough for your help. I hope your post will help others as well.
Thanks, Troy

marcus y - 25 Feb 2005 04:47 GMT Hello, I too am having a problem installing that same security update, but I am also unable to uninstall .NET Framework 1.1. This is the error I get with the security update NDP1.1sp1-886903-X86.exe (both from Windows Update and the Download Center)

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Trying to uninstall .NET Framework prompts me for a netfx.msi file which I don't have on my system.
Any ideas?

Deffiance - 01 Jul 2005 05:36 GMT I'm running winXP sp2 and having this problem. I tried the firs command prompt commands and that didn't work. Reading further down it gives more, but you lost me as what to do. Rename, delete from command prompt? I'm Stupid, please help.
> Hi Troy, > [quoted text clipped - 100 lines] > (This posting is provided "AS IS", with no warranties, and confers no > rights.) seatroy - 15 Feb 2005 22:49 GMT Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for the posts. My machine is still messed up. Right now I want to concentrate on the installation problems that I am having. As I stated in my earlier post, I now cannot install ANYTHING!!! that uses MSI scripts (which is almost anything from Microsoft and a hole lot from other software vendors). I need to fix my windows installer problem first and then I can tackle the .Net problem. It sounds like your problem is fixable. All you need to do is find out what pre-requisite your machine does not have. It would seem that there would be a log file somewhere with the details or there may be a switch you must use in a command-line argument when running the setup to show the details. I hope you are able to figure it out without messing up your machine (like mine). Microsoft (and others) complain that people don't keep their security patches up on their machines but they don't mention the thousands of people that have totally messed up their machines trying (once bitten, twice shy)...
Good Luck, Troy
