This problem came up at some point later. When, I have no idea! No real
hardware changes to speak of. I've never opened it up to install anything.
As far as software changes, various here and there, install and uninstall...
I keep everything up to date with 'Windows Update,' at least security and
most of the software updates, not too many of the hardware updates though.
I used a 'Symantec Anti-virus and web security suite' for a couple of years.
Then it sat and kept saying to renew my subscription so I uninstalled it and
have been using 'Avast' freeware anit-virus which I keep up to date. I also
use the latest freeware 'Spybot Search and Destroy,' the latest Lavasoft
'Ad-aware,' and Javacool 'Spyware Blaster'. Have used freeware 'Wise
Registry Cleaner' and 'Abexo Registry Cleaner' to check the registry.
My PC has been slow even before I started using any of the freeware stuff.
I run the programs and they always come up basically clean. It's funny
though how different programs always find different things! I even log on
every once in a while to Trend Micro's website for a free scan which bascally
comes up with nothing.
And as before mentioned, I clean out everything I can like the caches,
recycle-bin, old unused programs, run some of the PC's diagnostic tools.
Haven't defrag-ed though.
This computer's not - that - old. What, since 2002 or so? Of course in
computer terms that's pretty old right, but seriously, this slow?!
Back to you...

Two obvious things:
You're running the absolute *minimum* amount of memory for XP. Things would
get better if you'd invest in at least 1 Gigabyte of memory.
Defragmenting your hard drive will probably help, but you need more free
space as well. Once a hard drive becomes 75% full, it becomes inefficient.
Hard drives (like memory) are inexpensive.
If any of those anti-malware products have features that cause them to run
in the background all the time, turn those features off.
Yes, a 1.6 GHz 32 bit single core CPU from 2002 is old, but more memory,
more hard drive space and minimizing what's running in the background will
make a big difference.
