Hi There,

Hope everyone is weel? A few years ago I started off having a play with
Visual Studio 2002 I had around 5 Months exposure to it, and to say the
least became quite good with it. The intention was to truely learn VC++ and
VB but unfortunalty other things came along and I had no time. Well here I
am again ready to learn but i`ve notice 2008 is out in Beta. Im just really
wondering what to do. Should I download a copy of VS2008 Beta 2 and start
with that then upgrade to 2008 when its fully out. Or should I just go out
and get a copy of VS205 and stay with that?

Many Thanks
Si

If it's for learning purposes and there is no immediate requirement for
production work, I'd suggest that you download the VS 2008 Beta 2. That way,
you'll be exposed to the latest technologies and paradigms. I've been using
VS 2008 all summer in conjunction with various textbook examples, student
projects and assignments from texts designed for VS 2005, so backward
compatibility appears not to be a serious issue.
The guesstimate for VS 2008 release is "by the end of the year".

Hi There PvdG42,

Many Thanks for your prompt reply. Just wondering how stable is VS2008. I
was thinking about producing a small database front end for our department
using a SQL server. Only about 10 people using it. Do you mean "if its not
for production" as in for the whole net to download or at all?

Like i said it`ll only be a small front end for 10 users?

Many Thanks
Regards
Si

As there is *no* official support for beta software, and nobody with common
sense would install, let alone depend on, beta software on a production
machine, your intended use is a high risk adventure. You started by stating
that "Well  here I am again ready to learn but i`ve notice 2008 is out in
Beta", which I inferred to mean that you intended to use it as a tool to
help you learn .NET programming. Now you are saying you want to create an
application to be used in your work environment by other employees, IOW a
production environment.
Now that you've stated your actual intended use, the answer I gave you
previously is irrelevant. Purchase VS 2005 for your work.
