I am working on a PC for a co-worker who either never received restore disks
or lost them.  I know there is supposed to have been a lawsuit over this with
Compaq and some models.  I have a request into Compaq for restore disks but
if they won't give them or this model is not a part of that suit do you think
MS would give me a new number to work with the copy of XP Home that I have.
I can give XP Tag number and all that to verify that the machine is supposed
to have XP on it.  Thanks for any help with this.

If I'm not interpreting your question correctly, please let me know.

This Compaq PC came with an OEM version of Windows, thus the issue is
strictly between the owner and Compaq. Microsoft is not going to give you a
second key for your copy of XP Home for the purpose of installing it on a
computer somebody else owns. Quite correctly, Microsoft expects that person
to license Windows for themselves.

I suggest you have this co-worker contact Compaq and request restore disks
for her(him)self.

Understood.  Sadly, most users do not have a clue about this stuff.  I have
had to create the restore disks for people because they didn't even know
there was a program on the PC to do that and others have found out the hard
way when the machine crashes and then you can't create them.  I know it is
cheaper for the company but they need to go back to supplying the disks to
the user with a BIG RED TAG that says store these in a safe place.  I know
that won't help some people but it would be a big boon to many.

I think I didn't say it quite correctly.  The number was supposed to be for
her machine.  I would just use my disk since we have no OEM disks of any
kind.  I thought it might be considered like the "open" CD they gives schools
and such to use old PCs given to them and they would help her since she has a
license but no disk, but I understand what you are saying.

I have contacted Compaq on my co-workers behalf and will forward whatever
they offer to her.  Thanks!
